Preparation of ingredients
Ham
Step 1- Cut an entire ham into slices using an electric knife until the ham bone is exposed.
Step 2- Remove any excessive fat from the bone of the ham and set aside.
Making the ham broth
Preheat fire to medium heat.
Step 3- Add the ham bone and 2 quarts water into a large pot. Let simmer for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Step 4- Remove the ham bone and any other solid contents from the pot.
Step 5- Add 1 cup sugar, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1 and 1/2 cups pineapple juice, 1/2 cup cherry juice, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon all spice, 4 tablespoons salted butter, and 1/4 cup amaretto liqueur into the same large pot with the ham broth in it. Stir all ingredients together with a whisk until combined.
Baking the ham slices
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Step 6- Add the ham slices into an 11 by 16-inch roasting pan as evenly as possible. Pour the ham broth on top of the ham slices.
Step 7- Place into a preheated 325-degree oven on the middle rack. Bake for 25 minutes. Once the baking time has ended remove the ham slices from the oven.
Removing the excess fat
Important note- The ham broth won’t be as flavorful the first day you make it, I recommend you allow the ham slices to cool completely or place into the fridge overnight and reheat the next day so the flavors can settle and increase.
Step 8- To remove any excess fat pour the leftover ham broth in a fat separator and pour the ham broth portion back into the baking pan, leaving the leftover fat in the fat separator. You can also place the entire pan in the fridge overnight, letting the fat on top of the baking pan turn solid. The next day remove the fat from the top of the baking pan with a fork or spoon.
Reheating the ham slices
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Step 9- Cover the baking pan with aluminum foil. Place into a preheated 325 degree oven on the middle rack for 15 minutes. Once done remove the ham slices from the oven. From there they are ready to be served.
