What you’ll need
Bunny Texas Toast (8 slices)
Patton’s hot sausage (Patties or links)
Salted butter (Room temp)
Mayonnaise (Room temp)
American cheese slices
Tools
Frying pan or cast-iron skillet
Parchment paper
Napkins
Flat serving plate
Spatula
Preparation of ingredients
Hot sausage
Step 1- Add 1 pound and 3 ounces in weight of hot sausage into a medium-sized bowl. (Make sure your hot sausage is still cold but not frozen)
Step 2- Roll 4.5 ounces in weight of hot sausage into a ball. Once done you should have 4 hot sausage pieces total.
Step 3- Line flat serving plate with parchment paper, place one of the hot sausage balls on top of the parchement paper and press down until the patty is 6 to 7 inches in diameter. Make 4 indentations into the patty. From there cut out a 5 by 5-inch square patty. Remove the access hot sausage and set aside. Each hot sausage patty should be 5 by 5 inches.
Preheat fire to medium heat.
Step 4- Let frying pan get hot for 1 to 2 minutes. From there carefully add the hot sausage patty into the frying pan by flipping it over with the side of the parchment paper facing up. Carefully peel off the parchment paper. Let fry for 2 to 3 minutes on each side.
Step 5- Line a flat serving plate with napkins and add each hot sausage patty on to the napkins. Line the top of the hot sausage patty with napkins and press down. This will remove most of the grease. From there cover the serving dish with aluminum foil to keep warm and set aside.
Butter mayonnaise mixture
Step 6- Add 4 or 6 tablespoons softened salted butter (Room temp) and 4 or 6 tablespoons mayonnaise (Room temp) into a small bowl. Stir until combined and set aside.
Bread slices
Step 7- Spread a small amount of the butter mayonnaise mixture on to each slice of bread. Make sure you only coat one side of the bread and place onto a serving dish.
Preheat fire to medium heat.
Step 8- Heat your frying pan or cast-iron skillet for 1 or 2 minutes. Place each slice of bread with the side you coated with the mayonnaise butter mixture facing down into the frying pan or skillet. Let sear for 30 seconds to 1 minute. (Do sear the bread on the opposite side.) Remove each slice of bread from the skillet and place onto a serving dish. Make sure the bread is not on top of each other. Let the bread slices cool for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 9- Flip each bread onto the opposite side with the toasted side of the bread facing down. Add a generous amount of the mayonnaise butter mixture on to untoasted side of each slice of bread. Flip the bread back over onto the opposite side again with the toasted side facing up.
Step 10- Heat hot sausage patties in the microwave for 30 seconds or 1 minute.
Step 11- Add 1 slice of American cheese on to all 8 slices of bread and 1 hot sausage patty on to 4 slices of bread. Take the bread that has the slice of cheese on it and flip it onto the slice of bread that has the slice of American cheese and hot sausage on it. Once done you should have 4 assembled sandwiches. The untoasted side of each slice of bread should be facing outwards while the toasted side should be facing inwards where the cheese and hot sausage is.
Toasting your grilled cheese sandwiches
Preheat fire to medium heat.
Step 12- Heat cast iron skillet or frying pan for 1 to 2 minutes. Add each assembled grilled cheese sandwich into the skillet or frying pan. Press the sandwich down into the skillet or frying pan gently with a flat spatula. It sear for 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side. From there remove the grilled cheese sandwiches and place on to a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of the mayonnaise butter mixture on to each side of the sandwich while it’s still hot. Serve and enjoy!
