Apple Crisp

What you’ll Need

6 Large Granny Smith Apples

1 Large Lemon

All-Purpose Flour

Regular Sugar

Brown Sugar

Quaker Oats (Old Fashioned or Instant)

Unsalted Butter

Vanilla Extract

Cornstarch

Cinnamon

All Spice

Optional Ingredients

Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds (Chopped)

Tools You’ll need

13×9 Inch pan or 10×13 inch deep dish glass pan

Potato Peeler

Apple Corer

Pastry Blender

Making the Crumb Topping

Note- Make sure 1 1/2 sticks of Unsalted butter is at room temperature.

Step 1- Add 1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour, 1/3 Cup Sugar, 1/3 cup Brown Sugar, 1/4 Teaspoon of salt and mix until combined.

Step 2-Add 1 1/2 Sticks of Unsalted Butter (Room temp) and cut the butter into the flour mixture using a pastry blender. Mixture should be crumbly and should not come together to form dough.

Step 3- Add 1 Cup of Quaker Oats and 1 teaspoon of Vanilla Extract and mix until combined.

IF YOU ARE ADDING THE OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS. If not proceed to step 5.

Step 3A- Add 2/3 cup chopped pecans. almonds or walnuts and stir until combined.

Step 4. Cover Bowl with lid and place into fridge for 30 to 40 minutes.

Preparing your Apples

Step 5-Peel all 6 Apples. Afterwards core each Apple using the Apple corer. You should end up with 8 Apple Slices. If you don’t have the Apple Corer you will have to do this by hand.

Step 6- Take Each Apple Slice and cut down the length.

The next 3 steps explain what you want to do with your Apple slices. You can take them and add them into water with Lemon juice or you can place the Apple slices into a strainer and squeeze lemon juice on top.

Step-7 Wash your Lemon and cut it in half.

Option 1

Step 8- Squeeze one lemon half into a bowl of cold water and mix

Step 9- Add Apples slices into the water. This will prevent the apples from turning brown.

Option 2

Step 8A- Place Apple Slices into Strainer and Squeeze 1 half of a Lemon on top and toss apples with your hands. This will also prevent the apples from turning brown.

Making the Apple Filling

Step 10- In a Large Bowl Add 1 Cup Sugar, 1/2 Cup of Brown Sugar, 3 Tablespoons Cornstarch, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 Heaping Teaspoon of Cinnamon, 1/2 Teaspoon All Spice and mix until well combined.

NOTE– When you Add your Apple slices and stir them, the Apples will release a lot of liquid. This is normal.

Step 11- Add Apple Slices and mix for 5 minutes. This will give the Apples enough time to release all of their juices.

Step 12- In a large pot preheated to medium high heat add 1/2 Stick of Unsalted Butter. Let butter melt.

PREHEAT YOUR OVEN TO 350 DEGREES

Step 13- Add Apple Filling followed by 1 teaspoon of Vanilla extract and mix. Let simmer for 6 minutes. This will help thicken the filling.

Step 14- Add Apple Filling into baking dish and spread Apples evenly around pan the best way you can.

Step 15- Remove Crumb Topping out of fridge and generously sprinkle it on top of the Apple filling. Make sure that you use all of the Crumb topping.

Step 16- Place into a Preheated 350-Degree oven and let bake for 35 minutes.

Step 17- Let Apple Crisp cool for 1 hour before serving.

OPTIONAL STEP

PREHEAT OVEN TO 400 DEGREES

TO MAKE YOUR APPLE CRISP MORE BROWN AT THE TOP PLACE INTO THE BROILER PART OF YOUR OVEN FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES. DO NOT LEAVE IT IN NO LONGER THAN 2 MINUTES. IF YOUR APPLE CRISP IS ALREADY BROWN AT THE TOP THE SKIP DISREGARD THIS STEP.
